🧩 NDIS Support for Parents: What You’re Entitled To and How to Access It

Parenting is hard work — and when your child has a disability, it can feel overwhelming. But you’re not alone.
The NDIS offers support not just for children, but also for the parents and carers who are raising them.

In this article, I’ll explain:

  • What supports are available through the NDIS for parents and carers

  • How to include them in your plan

  • What to ask for during your next review

🧡 1. What NDIS Support Exists for Parents?

Support for you as a parent might include:

  • Parent Coaching (under Improved Daily Living): to help with routines, behaviour, emotional regulation, or communication

  • Support Coordination: to help you understand the plan and connect with the right services

  • Therapy or counselling: if it contributes to your child’s development goals

  • Supports for parents with disabilities (including your own NDIS plan)

Even though there’s no "parent" funding line, your needs can still be included — if they help your child thrive.

📘 2. How to Include Parent Coaching in Your Child’s Plan

At your plan meeting or review:

  • Talk about goals related to your parenting role

  • You can say:

“I want support to help me build my confidence in managing my child’s behaviours and setting up routines that help them feel safe.”

This can be funded under Improved Daily Living – Capacity Building.

👨‍👩‍👧 3. How Support Coordination Can Help Parents

If your child has coordination in their plan, you’re entitled to help that supports your role as a parent or carer.

Support Coordinators can:

  • Help you choose services that fit your child’s needs

  • Translate NDIA language and funding categories

  • Prepare you for plan reviews with clear documentation

At Independent Futures Support, I offer Support Coordination that’s child-focused, and grounded in a coaching approach.

🌿 4. Are You a Parent with a Disability?

If you have your own NDIS plan, it can include parenting supports — especially if parenting is part of your goals.

You may be eligible for:

  • Support Workers to assist with parenting routines

  • Coaching for managing home life

  • Counselling for parenting stress or fatigue

Talk to your planner about making “supporting my children” one of your functional goals.

✨ Final Thoughts

NDIS plans should support the whole family. That means your voice matters too.

I offer free intro calls if you’d like help preparing for your next plan meeting or learning how parent coaching works under the NDIS.
